From the Field: 2023 Cereal Variety Performance Trials Report

From the Field logo.

Our planting season officially finished on October 31 with our Moses Lake and Dayton fall-planted spring wheat trials, while our last winter trial was planted November 27 at Bickleton. Most trials went in relatively easily, though we did have some trouble spots. In anticipation of previous issues with our drill at Almira, we opted to rototill this trial site first and plant with our double-disc conventional drill. Despite a few hiccups, it looks like we did achieve pretty good stands there this year. Dusty was perhaps the most challenging site this year, likely due to damp residue from rain showers which caused the straw to ball up on us continually. Overall stands were certainly reduced but were fairly uniform across the trial when I last looked. However, plants were still fairly small. I will evaluate how well it fills in after spring green up.

Likely of more interest to you were our Connell and Lind sites this year. As I previously mentioned in September, Lind was exceptionally dry this past summer/early fall and we had to plant down about 9” to hit moisture. While there was some field variability, the data came back with significant differences among varieties. As expected, many of the entries did not successfully emerge from planting that deep and thus we replanted the trial on October 19–the same week the farm manager planted his fields for the first time. My technician, Jamie, took the second round of emergence notes before tilling under the plots for replanting that day. We attempted to direct seed using the deep furrow drill once again at Connell on August 30, but were unsuccessful in getting good stands overall. This too was tilled under and replanted the same day as Lind. I would consider planting conditions at Ritzville as optimal this year with excellent moisture only 4” down and stands are good there. Below are emergence notes taken at all three of these trial sites.

The 2023 final report was posted on the smallgrains.wsu.edu website in December. With the addition of the CL/AX and winter barley trials, the document is about 50 pages longer and was too large to upload as one file, so it is split into two parts. All available variety ratings (including emergence) have been updated in the variety characteristics tables posted at the top of the 2023 Variety Trial Data page and in the final report.

I am hoping to make a trip out to the Ritzville/Lind area to check out cold injury in the coming week or two after the brutal cold snap we experienced in January. From the weather maps I saw that was where snow cover appeared to be the lowest. If there is a trial in another area that likely sustained injury due to lack of snow cover, please let me know and I will try to stop by to take ratings.
