From the Field: 2024 Preliminary WSU Variety Trial Summaries (Pullman, Bickleton, Creston)

From the Field logo.

Preliminary summaries for WSU wheat variety trials at Pullman, Bickleton, and Creston are now available on the WSU Small Grains Website.

Pullman was a great trial with no issues to report.

As I mention in the trial notes in the PDFs, Bickleton SWW and CLOAX trials exhibited some N deficiency symptoms later in the spring despite following soil test recommendations. The HRW trial received 77 lb/ac of N in the fall and ended up yielding ~4-5 bu/ac more than the SWW. The Bickleton HRW trial has an elevated CV value, so those results are less reliable than the SWW and CLOAX trials there. There was also some cheatgrass pressure at the site.

I will not be publishing the Horse Heaven winter data after reviewing it. Emergence was somewhat uneven and there was heavy cheatgrass pressure in the trial, which led to a high CV.

The yield was exceptionally high at the Creston site this year and was a very good looking trial overall. It had only very minor winter injury as noted in the tables. There was stripe rust present in the trial, but few entries looked significantly impacted – the one exception being CPX66251 which proved to be highly susceptible and was hit hard at multiple sites this year.
