From the Field: 2024 Preliminary WSU Variety Trial Summaries (Anatone, Colton, Moses Lake, Douglas, Harrington)

From the Field logo.

Preliminary summaries for WSU soft white winter wheat trials, hard red wheat trials, and CL/AX trials at Anatone, Colton, Moses Lake, Douglas, and Harrington are now available on the WSU Small Grains Website.

Anatone had some cheatgrass pressure this year while Colton did not have any major issues to report. Moses Lake had some winter freeze injury and ratings are included in the tables. While the winter wheat was mostly okay, the fall planted hard red spring wheats died out from the cold this year.

LCS Shine and Nova AX did very well in both Douglas and Harrington for their respective trials. Douglas did not experience the winter cold injury to some of the more sensitive entries as was seen at Harrington this year. Those ratings are included in the Harrington tables and line up very closely to ratings taken at Ritzville this year. Thanks to the club wheat program for managing the Harrington variety trial for us once again this year!

I know there have been questions raised about some of the rankings that have been shared so far this yea–some have surprised me as well. I have gone back and triple checked every step in the process and have not found any errors in data sorting or transcription when merging files or uploading to our database to indicate these rankings or values are incorrect. I have been and will continue to be diligent in handling the data to ensure it is of the highest quality. As always, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
