Tim Murray Awarded $3 Million Endowment for Food Security

Dr. Tim Murray has been named the first Rosalie & Harold Rea Brown Distinguished Endowed Chair in Plant Pathology. This $3 million gift from the Rosalie & Harold Rae Brown Foundation will be used to bolster food security through basic and applied research of plant diseases.

The Rosalie & Harold Rae Brown Foundation is near and dear to Dr. Murray as he is the grandson of Rosalie Marie and Harold Rae Brown. He intends to work on food security issues to help future scientists in plant pathology and within WSU’s College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) and improve lives and communities throughout the state, region, and the world.

Dr. Murray is an active member of the WSU Extension Dryland Cropping Systems Team and provides leadership for the Disease Resources page on the Wheat and Small Grains website. He also provides leadership for planning, conducting research, and educational programming in areas including stripe rust updates, pathogen resistance, disease management, is a frequent participant of the WSU Wheat Beat Podcast, and a frequent presenter at the WSU Wheat Academy.Tim Murray in wheat field holding a photo of his grandparents.André-Denis Wright, dean of CAHNRS said “[Tim is] the best choice to be the first to hold this chair. His research is already helping to improve food security, and the additional resources from this endowment will continue that for years to come.”
