The Wilke farm is WSU’s only research facility in Eastern Washington’s intermediate production zone—12 to 16 inches of precipitation. It’s other claim to fame is a budget that depends entirely on crop sales to operate, a circumstance that causes Esser to do everything possible to earn a positive return on investment as he uses large strips to evaluate three and four year rotations on productivity, and weed and disease pressure.
